Helldivers

Helldivers is a co-op centric top-down shooter, with some stealth elements thrown in for good measure.  There are three main locales and enemy types, and progress towards defeating each group of enemies is recorded on a global scale.  When one group is defeated, everyone playing the game gets some credit.  You can join other people's games or they can join yours at any time, with up to four players on a team.

You roam a map with you teammates and try to complete the randomly generated objectives.  There are enemy patrols everywhere, and if they see you they will call in reinforcements.  If reinforcements are called you can easily get overwhelmed, so a primary strategy is to use stealth to take out the patrols before they see you.

Most of the objectives generally task you with something that will require you to stay in an area and survive whatever enemies happen upon you.  Some objectives involve destroying enemy structures, while others involve escorting friendlies across the map.  When you want to leave you go to the extraction point, and you have to wait about ninety seconds until your evacuation chopper shows up.  During this time enemy forces completely swarm the landing site.  When the level is done, you are awarded points based off of your performance, and these points are applied to the global effort in the fight against each faction.  If you completed all of the objectives you will get more rewards, but if you abandoned some objectives you won't get much.

In general I think this is a fun game, but honestly it gets pretty repetitive and boring at times.  It's at it's best when you are playing with three strong players and you attempt difficult levels, but even then it feels like most missions are the same.  There are "carrots on a stick" in the form of upgrade tokens for your weapons, but that doesn't change the gameplay too much.  With everything I'd heard about this game I expected a little bit more.

This is part of the weapons upgrade screen. You can earn upgrade tokens and spend them on the weapon of your choice.

I've set up a turret to help me guard the landing area.

You can revive teammates if you throw the appropriate item in time.

You get points based off of your performance and the level difficulty, and this is added to the global tally.

I noticed most of the high level characters use the same shotgun . . .
