Cole from Infamous. One of the loading screens. | Pa Rappa the Rapper from the PS1. | Drake and Scully from Uncharted. |
---|---|---|
Boom! | Heihachi from Tekken, with his sweet jacket. | |
One of the stages features Hades in Hades, which is later invaded by the Patapon. | Big Daddy (with a little sister) from Bioshock. | |
Sly and Drake are apparently nemesis's's's in this game. | ||
One of Drake's Super Moves is to throw a propane tank and shoot it in the air. Anyone caught in the explosion will be killed. | I believe this face was the original mascot for PlayStation, but not for long. | |
You're Welcome. | The main menu. It features a different character each time you boot up the game. | |
9:0 against 3 human players. Boo yah! | There's a trophy for killing all three players at the same time in online multiplayer. | This stage is from Resistance 2. The stage is later zapped up by a UFO into a stage from Ratchet and Clank. |
Heihachi's level 3 Super is to automatically kill all 3 players by attaching them to a rocket and firing away. | Heihachi is enjoying this too much. Also, he's wearing . . . undies? A giant diaper? | |
Drake's level 3 Super is to turn all of the other players into the undead (from Uncharted 1) and then he gets to take pot shots at them. | Looks like Drake just got Nariko with a propane tank. | |
Drake firing at players who he's turned into the original Nazi Zombies of video games. | The dojo from Pa Rappa the Rapper. It will soon be blown to pieces by a machine from the Killzone games. | |
Jak and Daxter. | ||
Ratchet and Clank. | ||
The new Dante from DMC: Devil May Cry. | ||
Sir Daniel from Medieval, in my favorite "I just lost" stance - sitting on his own grave. | ||
Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear: Rising. | ||
A loading screen. | ||
Cole from Infamous. | ||
Spike from the Ape Escape games. | ||
Nariko from Heavenly Sword. | ||
Sackboy from Little Big Planet. | ||
The little sister likes Sackboy, but the Big Daddy doesn't like this. | ||
Ratchet and Clank | ||
I think this guy's name is Sweet Tooth, but that might be that name of his ice cream truck. He's from the Twisted Metal series, which I have never played. | ||
Sweet Tooth and Kratos apparently don't like each other. | Sweet Tooth's level 3 is to turn into this giant thing. You can usually get upwards of 5 kills with it. | |
Sir Daniel of the PS1 game Medieval. | ||
Radec from Killzone is not amused by Sir Daniel's antics. | ||
Probably the best move in the game as far as taunting your human opponents goes - Daniel sticks his swoard in the ground, pulls back on it, and smacks his opponent in the face. Classic. | ||
The white cat is named Toro. He is the official PlayStation mascot in Japan, and apparently has been for quite some time. | ||
This stage features a scene from Uncharted 3 where the cargo is stuck coming out of a plane. | ||
I like the way Toro looks when sitting down. So casual. | ||
The costumes in PSABR are not merely a change in color, but a whole different character model. This Big Daddy costume is based off of the dolls you can find in Bioshock. | ||
Evil Cole. | ||
Evil Cole takes on Fat Princess and her minions. | ||
Regular Cole. | ||
Kratos from God of War. | ||
Radec from Killzone. | ||
Radec's level 2 Super Move involves shooting a giant green pulse, and shown in Killzone 3. | ||
Sly Cooper. | ||
One of Sly's costumes makes him look like Robin Hood. | ||
Heihachi's level 2 Super Move involves summoning a farting bear. | ||
And you know he means business just by looking at him! | ||
The icons at the bottom keep track of your Super Meter and also what level of Super Move you can currently unleash. | ||
Drake tied to Heihachi's rocket. | ||
Obligatory Platinum Trophy screenshot. | There was some free DLC where you got Kat from Gravity Rush as a new character. | |
Kat can turn into a half-panther thing. | ||
Emmett Grieves from Starhawk. | ||
This stage has the Hydra from the first God of War. | ||
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
This is a PS3 game but I took these screenshots from the PS Vita version, hence why the character models look a little jagged.
Have you ever played Super Smash Bros., or any of it's sequels? This game is somewhat similar: a four player brawler where all of the characters are from other franchises. Though PSABR (or "Saber," as my friend and I affectionately call it - with a Sean Connery accent) obviously draws inspiration from Smash Bros., the gameplay is actually quite different. In other words, I think they are more in the same category of game rather than direct competitors.
Let me see if I can explain what I mean. In Smash Bros., each time you are hit your percentage goes up, and the higher your percentage the farther you fly when you are hit. You die if you are knocked off of the stage. The game features regular moves, smash moves, and special moves. In PSABR you don't take damage, but rather each time you hit an opponent you fill a Super Meter. When this meter is filled you can use a Super Move, which is the only way to kill opponents. If you save up your Super Meter then you can upgrade to Level 2 and Level 3 Super Moves, each more powerful than the last. The game also features regular moves and special moves for each character.
This might sound like the games are actually quite similar, but I think there are a few key gameplay differences:
1. One problem in Smash Bros. is that it's possible (and often happens) for one player to hide while two other players duke it out; when one player gets a high percentage then the coward moves in for the kill. This is not possible in PSABR because you can't unleash a Super Move unless you are the one dealing the damage. Cowards can't win.
2. Because you don't take damage when you're hit, you don't technically suffer a penalty by getting hit (especially in 3 or 4 player matches). This rewards more aggressive play styles and discourages avoiding other players.
3. You know that tense feeling in Smash Bros. that comes when one player is at like 250%? Just one hit and they'll go flying! Well, that tension is almost always present in PSABR because if someone has their Super Meter filled then they could kill you in one hit at any time! I really enjoyed this dynamic.
Both games feature a variety of characters, stages, and items. I would say that PSABR is a little lackluster compared to Smash Bros. in terms of the roster. Nintendo has a lot of great, classic characters. PlayStation does as well, but confusingly didn't include many of their biggest characters. For example, where is Solid Snake? Other strange omissions include Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, anyone from the Resistance series, etc.
The stages in both games are very good, but one thing I thought was special was that each stage in PSABR is a mash-up of two different franchises. For example, you might start a stage on the inside of a cargo plane, then the stage extends across cargo flying through the air (Uncharted 3), and then the stage moves up to the city of Columbia where you are attacked by the Songbird (Bioshock Infinite).
Overall, I think critics were far too harsh on PSABR and probably didn't give it the time it deserves. The gameplay is very well designed, and each character is extremely well-balanced so that things stay fair. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone with a device able to play it, and you can probably get the game for very cheap these days.
As a final note, it was hard for me to get good or otherwise interesting screenshots of this game in action, and most of the screenshots are from each character's story mode, which is basically artwork.
