The Deadly Tower of Monsters

This was one of those games I got on PS Plus and thought "Oh brother. What cheap garbage is this that they're throwing on PS Plus this month?"  I was very pleased to be totally wrong.  The Deadly Tower of Monsters is a third person action game where you actually play as actors in an old sci-fi DVD.  There is narration throughout the game in the form of the director of the DVD providing commentary.  It becomes apparent that this was a low budget flick and there is a fun sense of humor throughout the game.  You can play as one of three characters, and you come across a variety of environments on your way up the tower.

As the title of the game suggests, the game consists of climbing a massive tower.  It's so massive that towards the end of the game it extends high into the atmosphere.  A cool gameplay mechanic is that any time you're falling you can simply press triangle to return to where you jumped from.  This effectively gives you the ability to skydive the length of the tower at any time with no negative consequences.  I thought this was pretty cool and appreciated that the game designers were practical about a game consisting of one giant tower.  You can also warp up the tower to any waypoints you've unlocked.

As mentioned previously, there are a variety of enemies and environments, usually with a sci-fi theme.  Towards the start you battle claymation stop-motion dinosaurs, and the effect looks just like old monster movies.  Later you might come up against lizard people or a robotic chameleon.  Since the game isn't too long things never feel sterile.

There are a few RPG-style elements where you can purchase and upgrade weapons and upgrade your stats.  There are a variety of optional objectives to complete, and if you complete them you can improve your health, damage, defense, and other stats.

The Deadly Tower of Monsters released cheaper than a full priced game and I imagine you can get it for almost nothing these days.  If you're craving something quirky and funny that isn't too demanding, it might be worth a few hours of your time!
