This is a typical screen, where you can dig to your hearts desire to uncover riches and power-ups. You can see a map of my mine in the upper right.

Some areas of the mine contain special power-ups. These areas are pre-made and require puzzle solving.

SteamWorld Dig

SteamWorld Dig is on a variety of platforms, but I played it on the PS4.  Basically, you are a robot that has inherited a mine in a small town.  You dig down, find upgrades, and defeat enemies.  Many of the gems you find can be sold and ultimately used to upgrade various aspects of your character, such as a better pickaxe or more efficient use of water for steam-powered functions.  In a way it has a lot in common with Minecraft, but is more structured and not nearly as expansive.  It's a smaller game that comes at a small price, and it's probably worth at least some of your time.
