Rebel Galaxy

Rebel Galaxy was free on PlayStation Plus right before No Man's Sky came out, so I played it to tide me over.  Little did I know that it is probably the superior game . . . In Rebel Galaxy you only really play as a spaceship, but I am left to assume you are actually the pilot.  You fly around in space, but only on a flat plane - you can't veer up or down, just left and right.  It sounds weird but it plays just fine.  However, the lack of maneuverability is annoying in space battles because enemy ships CAN move in all directions.  I think that as time goes on you buy automated weapon systems that do the majority of the fighting for you, but at first I felt underpowered for all of the fights I was in.

There is a story that impels you forward, but it's nothing too memorable.  Basically you are trying to learn what happened to somebody and why you were given a certain object.  The bulk of the gameplay consists of getting quests, fighting enemy ships, and exploring wreckage for resources.  You use the resources to upgrade your ship in various ways, including combat abilities and warp abilities.  The game itself looks pretty cool and the warp effects are impressive. It's a game I wish I got a bit more into before I got engrossed in a worse game.

You can hire a pilot to accompany you around. They basically act as a bodyguard.
