This is the first level in the game. You can see how the notes you collect add to the song, and the creatures or structures in the environment also add to the music.
This is the third to last level in the main game, and is my favorite.
Since you can make your own level in Sound Shapes, I thought I'd give it a try! It's actually pretty hard to make a good tune because the notes play only within three screens of where they are collected. I made the level go up and to the right, then back down - this has the effect of stopping a few notes for a bit and then reintroducing them when you get closer to the screen they were collected on.
These are a few randomly selected user-generated levels. The Sound Shapes community is huge and there are thousands of levels, including some made by the head of PlayStation, Shu Yoshida!

You play as a small green blob (seen in the bottom right). Anything that is red will kill you. | A mellow scene with flowers. | Red kills you, so you need to bounce off of these things to get across the gap. But be careful - each time you bounce off of the same one you bounce higher! |

A much easier pit to cross. | There are a few different styles of level design in the main campaign. This level features bold colors with strong contrast.
Those gray cloud-like things rotate very fast. You can stick to most surfaces in the game, but make sure you don't get moved into the fiery comets! | The difficulty starts to pick up around here.
That green thing at the bottom bounces you as you try to avoid all of the projectiles. | Deadmau5 is a contributing sound artist.
Touching the record player (on the right) will end the level. | The start of my favorite level. | The missiles have some serious jive. |
A Nuke about to blow up the screen! | Ahhhhhh! | This level has some different properties, namely that you can float around in the green goop. This level also has some crazy music! |
Good luck getting past all of those moving red things! | Obligatory Platinum Trophy screenshot.
A custom level with some serious curvation. Did I mention that you can stick to most surfaces? | Part of a level I made. Isn't it beautiful? | Another part of a level I made. |
I nice screen from a player-created level. | Each level will grade you (with no penalty or rewards) and compare you to how well you did compared to everyone else in the world.
Another custom made level. | Very creative artistry from a player-created level.
I've never heard of Beej, but I have it on good authority that he rules. | The start of a popular custom level.
All sorts of things show up in player-created levels! | Another player-created level.
Players get quite creative in how to use the game mechanics in their levels. |
Sound Shapes
I have played Sound Shapes on PS3, PS4, and the Vita, but these screenshots are from the Vita version. Sound Shapes is a 2D platformer where each note you collect creates a sound. As you progress through a level and collect notes a soundtrack emerges. Most environmental objects and enemies create a sound and also add to the soundtrack. I created a Youtube playlist of every level in the main game, which you can find here. It makes for some nice background music at work!
Each note you collect actually only makes a noise for the next 3 screens, so the song progresses into various stages by some very crafty sound design.
I think that people who are light gamers will enjoy this, as will more intensive gamers. Later levels can be quite difficult, and after the game you unlock challenges that will make even the most hardcore gamer squeeze the controller with frustration.
The game also features a robust level creator, with thousands of levels made from other players. Some of them are not any good, but there are a LOT of very good levels with some great tunes. Give it a try!
