Super Time Force Ultra is a 2D sidescrolling game with dozens of playable characters. They each have a unique moveset and weapon. You play through the level until you inevitably die, and that's where the twist comes in - you can rewind time to play the level again, either as the same character or a new one. But there's another twist! Your first character will run through the motions you just put him through and thus he basically fights alongside you. You are given a generous amount of lives for each stage, and by the time you complete a level there are weapons blasting apart enemies everywhere!
That's basically how the game works. This creative mechanic is well explored in the game and there are some great boss battles. Most of the bosses simply couldn't be beaten with only one character within the time limit, which means you will fight the boss as best you can, die, then rewind time to start the fight again. Before long you'll have 10 characters blasting away at the boss. At the end of each level you can see a complete replay of the level with all of the characters going through their part. Even though you took 10 minutes in real life fighting a boss, the replay might only take 10 seconds. It's satisfying every time.
Every TIME?! Get it?!!! This game has about a million time-based puns, and they are all written is a self-aware way so it works. The game also features a hard mode where you can't use a character in a level if they have already died. This is significantly more challenging than the regular game mode and provides hardcore gamers with a good challenge. You can get your characters back, however, if you can save them from their death; that is, if you kill their assailant before they deliver the deadly blow, then you can recover the killed character.
I had a ton of fun with this game and I'm excited for whatever these developers come out with next!
Super Time Force Ultra
A loading screen. | This one image tells you all you need to know about what you're in for. | A city skyline before being infiltrated by the Super Time Force! |

Two eye patches? | Oh . . . | I don't get it . . . |
Using X in a date is such a 90's thing to do in video games. It was weird and should be made fun of.
Googolplex is a number. That number is a one followed by one hundred zeroes. Now you know why Google is named Google! | This boss battle is in a video game and as such has a few major boss enemies. | Pretty cool ASCII dragon. |
This brain with eyes shoots out game glitches. | The Super Time Force is on the scene! | You can see the character I'm playing as plus the phantoms of characters I'd already played as. |
Yes, the president of PlayStation is a playable character! | Killing a boss with lots of players.
This image was too absurd to not take a screenshot. It had to be done. | Stupid dinosaurs!
Sir Galahad is shooting lighting in the bottom right, whereas my guy with a grenade launcher is in the center. | You have a jet pack in this level. I used some machine gun dudes to create a wall of bullets ahead of me.
Yes, a pterodactyl with a jet pack. | Boom! | So many bullets! And Shu Yoshida shooting hearts! |
Case closed! | Each level has ten yellow diamonds to optionally collect. Most require you to coordinate the actions of multiple heroes, such as one killing an enemy and another standing far back to catch the diamond that launches out. | This level involves protecting this police van while enemies come from all around. Creating defenses felt oh so satisfying. |
One guy can create round blue shields that offer brief protection from enemies. It sounds good but is really difficult to use effectively. | lol
Colonel Repeatski with no eye patch? . . .
mayhem, Mayhem, MAYHEM! | You can play on a hard mode where you are unable to use the same player twice unless you save the first copy from death. You can also use super-powered (purple) players, but they self destruct after about 15 seconds. But man, do they pack as sweet, sweet punch.
I'm not sure what's going on here but I'm sure it was awesome. | You battering ram against a medieval castle is literally a rocket. | This game involves killing babies. Well, ASCII babies, but you'll definitely become a serial killer if you play this game. |
Obligatory platinum trophy screenshot. A difficult one and well earned, if I do say so myself. And I do. |
