Stranger's Wrath was originally released for the PlayStation 2 but was HDed up and released on the PS3 and PS Vita. At it's core it's a bounty hunter game. You play as an unidentified creature who receives contracts as you move from town to town. The game is playable in both first and third person view. In first person view you have a crossbow-like weapon that can hold two projectiles at a time; the twist is that the projectiles are living animals! Each animal you fire has a unique effect, and each one can be caught in the open-world environment. As an example, one projectile might temporarily paralyze an enemy while another ties it up.
I think the story is actually pretty good - which surprised me. Towards the start of the game your character goes to the doctor to get a quote on a much needed operation. The doctor gives a very high price - one that is almost unattainable just by collecting bounties. Your character becomes aware that there is an insanely high payout if he can manage to capture or kill a creature known as a Steef, and much of the story from that point focuses on you competing with other bounty hunters to claim the last surviving Steef. The story sounds a little tame, but it gets very engaging about half way through the game.
The game shows it's age in the control scheme and camera controls - both just seem clunky by modern standards. If you don't play the game for awhile you will likely have trouble upon returning because there isn't really a UI around the quest system. For example, you might have completed a bounty but had not gone back and turned it in, and if you don't remember where you are supposed to go to turn it in then you'll just have to guess, which can be a tedious process. All in all, though, the game holds up pretty well and was probably ahead of it's time when it came out.

Two of the varmints you can use as projectiles. The spider on the left can temporarily tie up enemies, and the one on the right can acts as a proximity mine and chews on them if they get too close. | Part of the opening cinematic.

A rival bounty hunter. | You know those crossbows that are like, DOUBLE crossbows?
This is the screen used to select your ammo. The left and right sides are identical but allow you to specify what ammo goes where. | Speaking to the proprietor of a store, which is where you get bounties. | If you keep running then eventually you'll start running quickly on all fours. It makes for shorter travel times. |
There are frequently ropes to climb, and they feel a lot like the ones in Mario 64. Which is to say . . . a little awkward. | Git 'er Dun! | Our beloved protagonist. |
The bug on the right is the staple projectile. Unlike the other forms of ammunition, you have unlimited shots with it. You can hold down the fire button to charge up your shot for more damage. | Not a lot of business in this store.
Pretty impressive for a PS2 game. | The doctor. He's kind of a jerk.
One of the towns. | ||
Giant hillbilly chickens are the primary civilians.
That creature on the left is the equivalent of shooting a beanbag from a shotgun. | There are these weird gecko guys that sometimes need rescuing.
Not always, but in general you get more money if you can capture the bounty alive. | The radar in the bottom left shows you the enemy cones of vision.
That bug on the right - the one you have infinite ammo for - can sometimes be used to activate electronics. | A Steef head mounted to some guys wall. | The villain. |
Sometimes the chickens can give you hints or valuable information.
Later on in the game you can pay to have your ammo upgraded. The spider on the right has been upgraded and gains new functions.
A . . . Steef . . . ? | Wha?! Oh yeah, spoiler alert for a PS2 game on a website that no one will ever visit.
The last Steef. | I guess that makes sense why he runs on all fours . . .
The way you capture bounties is kind of weird, but works in a video-gamey way. You basically try to vacuum up the enemies. It generally doesn't work unless you've knocked them out or tied them up. | Save the geckos!
#GoGetThoseGeckos | ||
Towards the end you try to take on an enemy base. | That one on the left has sort of a sad existence . . .
Storming the fortress. In a canoe.
There are some pretty tough bosses toward the end. | Those spider things are the worst. The worst.
Wait, the main enemy is a steef too?! Wha-? | #GotThoseGeckos
Some concept art or something that I unlocked. |
